Heck I’m making that argument with my son about whether to live at home or in a dorm for college. You can control your roommate but not necessarily others with whom you’ll share a bathroom.

He has the option of living at home? That is a no-brainer. My daughter lived in dorm one year, by second semester she was driving home every night because the dorm and roommate were awful. She transferred closer to home and lived with us for 3 years. Dorm life is nice for meeting people and great if you are a party animal, but not if you like quiet and privacy.
Yep we’re about 20 mins to campus. I think he’ll hate it but he’s 17 so doesn’t listen to mom. He claims now that he can’t focus on his school work unless his bedroom door is closed and has no distractions. That’s not gonna work living on campus…
I’m trying. He keeps talking about working or getting a scholarship to help pay for his college. I keep telling him the easiest solution is to live at home. Living on campus costs more than my mortgage! It isn’t the tuition, it’s an in state school, it’s the room and board! And yes, I told him I’d get him an apartment his Jr/Sr years with someone known and trusted. I even told him if he decides to live in a dorm, he can figure out how to pay for the whole shebang but if he lives at home 2 years, I’ll pay for all of it.
My son had a mask free blast at college during covid because he was not in university housing. They couldn't force their draconian measures on them like the college housing students had to suffer with. They became party central. Gave the big middle finger to the covidiots. Yeah👍

I used to work at a university and most of the adjustment problems with the new students were roommates.
Too loud, too much partying, too many visitors, too messy...
And, it is very expensive to live on campus with a meal plan.
Better to live at home and save that money.
Yep. I hated living in the dorm. And many schools require you to purchase a meal plan if you live on campus.
Think the money issue. Wait till sophomore or junior years so you can live off campus. Save money that way and have a lot more control.

Our kids lived in a small house we owned near campus. We paid the expenses and sold it after the last one graduated.
